Diabetes and Diagnosis:What it Means for You

So, you’ve just learned that you have diabetes, and diagnosis protocols are not in question. You’ve gotten a second opinion and the test results don’t lie. You either have pre-diabetes or full blown diabetes.  Now what?

Well, there are many things you can do to help improve your situation drastically. First, if you have pre-diabetes, you can make the diet and lifestyle changes needed to prevent it from turning into diabetes.

If you have diabetes, you will need to follow the proper treatment and change your diet and lifestyle to help manage the disease. There have even been cases where the right diet and lifestyle plan caused the disease to regress – meaning the patient started to lose their dependence on insulin. In some cases, the diabetes has even disappeared (in cases of Type II diabetes).

Getting the Proper Treatment

The first thing you need to do with your diabetes and diagnosis is to make sure that you receive the proper treatment. You should be under the care of a physician who will prescribe you the necessary medications, especially insulin. If you are a diabetic, it means that your pancreas has stopped making insulin, or that insulin production is not up to par. Failure to do this step can possibly make the diabetes get worse.

Evaluate Your Current Lifestyle

Why do you think you were diagnosed with diabetes? Chances are, there is some kind of reason for it that is present in your diet or your lifestyle. Are you packing some extra weight? Are your eating habits not as good as they should be? Do you exercise? If you are overweight, you eat poorly, and you don’t exercise then you have put yourself at risk. Bear in mind that this is only a true statement for Type II diabetes.

The very first thing that you should do once you are diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes is to lose weight. To do this, you will need to clean up your eating habits and eat foods that are rich in protein, healthy carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. In addition you should eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

The Principals of Healthy Eating

Eating to prevent or manage diabetes is no different than the regular health guidelines. Make sure your diet has a lot of variety to it so you can be sure to get a range of nutrients. You may also want to sprinkle cinnamon on your food a few times a day because it can help lower your blood glucose levels.

You Need to Exercise!

Following an exercise program is also an important part of managing your diabetes and even preventing pre-diabetes from turning into full blown diabetes. Consult with your doctor before starting with an exercise plan.

You can start out as easy as you need to and gradually build up to more intense physical activity. A good plan incorporates cardiovascular activity, strength work, and adequate stretching and flexibility training.

If you want to handle your diabetes and diagnosis well, you need to treat it in a combination of ways. By following a healthy diet, exercising, and following your doctor’s advice you can really go a long way to prevent and treat diabetes.
