Diabetes and Food-How to control your sugar levels

With the holiday season approaching, how do you juggle diabetes and foods – especially when there are so many activities from now through the end of the year which seem to revolve around eating too many rich foods and heavy deserts?

It can be a nightmare for anyone trying to maintain or lose weight during this season.  But for a diabetic, not eating right could prove to be costly.

One way you might enjoy partaking in the holiday feasting with your friends and family is to reduce your portions.  This allows you to get a “taste” of Grandma’s special apple pie without risking your health.  You might need to bring along extra insulin, or exercise more, but you can enjoy the holidays with everyone else by carefully monitoring your diabetes and eating foods mindfully.

One way of controlling your sugar and carbohydrate intake is to volunteer to bring a low-sugar desert or side dish.  This more easily controls your sugar intake and it’s a great way to get through the holidays without feeling deprived.  Try reworking some of your holiday recipes.  Try using low fat alternatives or reduce the sugar when preparing some of your holiday dishes.  On many deserts, you can reduce sugar by one half to one third and substitute with spices.  Sugar substitutes are another good option.

Since there are usually a variety of dishes on the table, instead of loading up on stuffing and mashed potatoes, eat steamed veggies instead.  Or spread your intake of carbohydrates throughout the day to avoid spikes in your blood sugar.

So what are your plans for the holidays?  Are you traveling? Do you have a family traditional such as going on an annual ski trip or ice skating?  If you don’t have some kind of physical activity in your holiday celebration, this is a great chance to start a new tradition and get physical.  It will not only help you, but it will help future generations from falling into a sedentary lifestyle and lead more healthy lives.

Diabetes and food are not enemies.  Ironically, the right diet for a diabetic is a good diet for anyone.  So enjoy the season with your loved ones and create some new traditions!
