Diabetes And Health: The Powerful Connections
Did you know that there are some powerful connections between not contracting diabetes, and health in general? There is. But first let me make clear what I’m talking about. There are two kinds of diabetes. One kind is congenital, which means a person is born with it. That’s Type 1 diabetes, or what most people used to call juvenile diabetes. But many people aren’t aware that there’s a second type, called adult onset diabetes, or Type 2. And while there’s nothing a person can do to prevent being born with Type 1, there are a whole lot of things you can do to prevent coming down with Type 2, which is the kind of diabetes I’m talking about here. What are the connections between diabetes and health?
There are actually two connections between diabetes and health in general. They both have to do with your weight. You’ve probably heard in the media doctors and public health experts talking about the growing epidemic of obesity in this country. If you haven’t, unless you’re sight impaired, you’ve no doubt noticed it yourself. We are becoming a nation of overweight, even obese, people. There are two main causes of this, and the first one is our diet. Far too many of us eat way too much food, period. And a lot of the food we do eat is junk, full of sugars and starches and calories. And, there’s no point in trying to sugarcoat it (pardon the pun), but this is a diet that’s strongly linked to diabetes.
The second link between diabetes and health in general is lack of exercise. We’re already getting fatter as a nation from our eating habits, and our lack of exercise only compounds this. A lot of the bad effects of a poor diet could be ameliorated with regular exercise, but few people take the time for that. And, again, this is a recipe for disaster. Poor diet and lack of exercise are not only terrible for our overall health, but anyone who leads such a lifestyle is at far, far higher risk of diabetes. So take control of your health now to prevent diabetes in the future.
