Diabetes And Heart Disease: Some Ways To Reduce Your Risk
If you’re a fairly well informed citizen, you’re probably aware that there’s a growing epidemic of obesity in this country. We hear about that all the time in the media. But did you know that there’s another epidemic that is spiraling out of control in America, even in our children? It’s called adult onset diabetes, or Type 2 diabetes. And yes, more and more kids are being diagnosed with this disease that, until quite recently, was virtually unknown in minors. Diabetes is a ravaging disease. It can lead to blindness, kidney failure, and even limb amputation due to poor circulation. But most diabetics actually die of heart disease. Here are some things you should know about diabetes and heart disease.
It’s something that every diabetic has to worry about, because diabetes and heart disease go hand in hand. Nearly two out of three diabetics will die of heart disease or stroke, and they’ll do so at an earlier age than the average person who isn’t diabetic. This is a terrible statistic, and what makes it even worse is that many of the deaths from heart problems and stroke could have been prevented. Every person in America who suffers from diabetes should make it a priority to take good care of their heart and their entire cardiovascular system.
There’s no denying that it’s going to be tougher to do that when you have diabetes, but its’ even more important that you do so. You’ll need to eat a healthy diet, with plenty of fruits and veggies. And, with your doctor’s approval, you’ll also want to start a regular regimen of moderate aerobic exercise if you haven’t already. That should be one of your top priorities. On top of this, you’ll want to strictly monitor your blood sugar levels at all times, and keep records for the past few months so you can get an average reading. Following these steps can reduce your risks. Diabetes and heart disease will always be strongly correlated, but it doesn’t mean you have to be a victim.
